Strategic Technological Focus Areas Based on New IC Development:
1. Development of SuperCap Packs:
- Objective: Design and deploy SuperCap packs that could be integrated directly into RC models or drones, potentially as a permanent power source throughout the vehicle’s lifecycle.
- Key Advantages: SuperCaps offer a 500-fold increase in cycle life compared to standard batteries, a recharging rate 100 times faster than typical Li-ion batteries, and the ability to deliver currents up to 100 times stronger. Although technical challenges remain, our advanced ICs are specifically designed to address these, significantly reducing the need for large Li-ion batteries and allowing for smaller “starter” Li-ion batteries that are 10 to 50 times smaller.
2. Active Battery Cell Balancing Module:
- Objective: Develop a compact, cost-effective module (20 x 8 x 3 mm) that can be plugged into existing battery balancing leads to improve battery performance.
- Key Advantages: For a minimal FOB cost of less than €1.00, this module will enable up to 30% longer flight times per charge and extend battery lifespan by approximately 30%, particularly benefiting Li-ion batteries.
3. Enhanced Battery Management Systems (BMS):
- Objective: Develop advanced BMS and handling electronics to address limitations in high-specific-energy batteries, particularly around State of Health (SoH) and State of Safety (SoS) precision and response times.
- Key Advantages: These advancements will support mass production of batteries with high specific energy. Scientific progress shows that while Li-ion batteries have dominated the market, new battery types with improved BMS capabilities are now viable. By 2024-2025, new aerospace and automotive-grade batteries are expected to achieve energy densities of at least 450 Wh/kg, a significant improvement over the current average of 180 Wh/kg. This weight reduction is crucial for many mobile applications, particularly in aerospace and automotive sectors.
By focusing on these areas, this consortium has the potential to reshape the battery market, capturing early commercial advantages and setting new industry standards in battery technology.
